Martin Truex, Jr.’s No. 78 Furniture Row Racing car featuring World Vision, clean water paint scheme at Bristol, Atlanta

Martin Truex, Jr., driver of the No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet SS, is looking for a win in 2014.

As he continues his quest for a victory this weekend at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway and Aug. 31 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Truex, Jr.’s car will sport World Vision colors to help bring clean water to children and families in Africa.

“As a driver, staying hydrated is a top priority, but I’m blessed to never have to think about finding clean water,” says Martin. “Giving just $10 to provide clean water is an amazing way to change a child’s life.”

The No. 78 car’s new paint scheme will feature the bold orange-to-white gradient fans enjoyed June 28 in Kentucky. But during the Bristol and Atlanta races, it will offer an easy way to support drilling a well for a community in Zambia.

NASCAR fans can give $10 to provide one child with clean water for four years by texting WATER to 777444.

The team comes off a 36th place finish at the Pure Michigan 400, after the No. 78 car sustained heavy damage in a multi-car collision in the 22nd lap.

Looking forward to the Aug. 23 race at the half-mile oval in Bristol, Martin says the team has had mixed results there. “I do love racing at Bristol and have always enjoyed that place,” Martin says. “I had a lot of good runs and also bad runs there.”.

On race day at Bristol, World Vision plans to build hygiene kits with fans and supporters, which will be distributed locally to children and families affected by disaster, homelessness or poverty.

More than 1,600 children younger than 5 die each day from diseases caused by drinking dirty water. World Vision delivers clean water to one new person every 30 seconds. But hundreds of millions of people worldwide still need access to clean water.

While the car wears its colors in Tennessee and Geogia, World Vision aims to raise $15,000 to drill a well that will provide clean drinking water to a community in Zambia.

Both efforts are because of Furniture Row Racing team owner, Barney Visser, a longtime partner with World Vision.

“We’re so fortunate to have [the team’s] long-term support as we tackle the root causes of poverty and injustice, and share our work with NASCAR fans,” says Morris Franklin, director of sports and entertainment at World Vision U.S.

Currently ranked 26th in the overall Sprint Cup Series standings, with 516 points, Martin is just behind Tony Stewart (537) and just ahead of Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. (476). He must win one of the next three races to qualify for the Chase for the Sprint Cup, which consists of the top 16 drivers vying for the championship.

Day 2: Race to the Sprint Cup

Ten-year-old Douglas Ford stood outside garage 27 with his dad, Kent, patiently waiting in the 90-degree heat to meet driver Martin Truex Jr. While other teams buzzed between garage stalls and hauler trucks, the pair were content to watch the Furniture Row Racing crew ready the No. 78 World Vision car.

“It’s very fan-friendly,” Kent says as they peek into the open garage door. “How many sports let you get up close and personal?”

This is a classic picture of Cup Series American auto-racing at its best.

Douglas clutched his blue die-cast replica of Martin Truex’s former No. 56 Napa Auto Parts car. He would wait as long as he had to for Martin’s autograph.

Between practice rounds and media interviews, Martin made good on that appearance. Douglas got his autograph.

As the day goes on, the team tweaks and adjusts all aspects of Martin’s car. It must pass inspection before it can run in the qualifying rounds.

As I learned from conversations with engine tuners, general managers, racing enthusiasts, and from watching the process myself, each car, no matter the make, must literally fit the mold before it can compete.

Well, Martin and the No. 78 car World Vision team passed inspection and qualified 19th in tomorrow’s starting field of 42 drivers. World Vision Experience Hauler – Kisongo Trek

As the crew rolled the World Vision car onto the final inspection platform, “Fish” (the engine tuner) offered his thoughts on the key factors heading into Saturday night’s race.

“The motor’s gotta run all day; that’s my big deal,” he says. “You gotta have quick pit stops. Track position will be big. And the track’s so rough here that they (the drivers) won’t get close to each other, because they don’t want to wreck. They’ll just bounce everywhere. Just getting the car to happen is a big deal. You go from the hot of the day to the cool of the night; the track changes. It’s a lot to put into it to cover all the bases.”

Martin Truex, Jr.
Martin Truex, Jr.’s love of racing began on the go-kart tracks of his childhood, and has stuck with him since. He began his NASCAR Racing career in 2004 with Dale Earnhardt, Inc. leaving for Michael Walttrip racing in 2010, most recently joining Furniture Row Racing as driver of car #78 for the 2014 Season.
